Cultural Competency Training Series

Service providers working with families with young children in the Sioux Falls-area are invited from CPCM and LSS for a free, online training series.

  • Ongoing series, with multiple topics to choose from
  • Flexibility to mix and match sessions based on your schedule (each topic will be offered more than once)
  • Sessions will include instruction and attendee participation through conversation

Tues, Nov 21 | 12:00pm to 1:00pm | Cultural Awareness – Relating to Norms
Using descriptive cultural continuums and examples from lived experience we will identify and discuss cultural norms. Participants will come away with a visual representation showing where they and someone they know would fall on cultural continuums including Time Orientation, Individualism and Collectivism, Direct and Indirect Communication and more.

Tues, Dec 5 | 12:00pm to 1:00pm | Cultural Awareness – Understanding Values
In this session, participants will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of specific cultural norms and values. We will grow awareness of our own cultural hooks and explore root causes of these cultural norms.

Thur, Dec 7 | 6:00pm to 8:00pm | Cultural Awareness Evening Session
This 2-hour session will cover both parts of the Cultural Awareness training, Relating to Norms and Understanding Values.]

Tues, Dec 19 | 12:00pm to 1:00pm | Refugee Resettlement 101
This session will explore what it means to become a refugee and the process of resettlement from country of origin, to refugee camp, to the interview process, arrival and adjustment to life in a new country.

Thur, Jan 4 | 6:00pm to 8:00pm | Refugee Resettlement 101 AND Diversity Panel
This 2-hour session will include 2 parts, Refugee Resettlement 101 and Diversity Panel.

Tues, Jan 16 | 12:00pm to 1:00pm | Diversity Panel

This panel presentation will elevate the voices of immigrant and refugee residents as they speak to their backgrounds, what brought them to the US, some key points regarding life in their homeland, the main challenges in adjusting to life in the US and perspectives on how to support success for our culturally diverse clients.
