What Is The Basic Needs Task Force?

The Basic Needs Task Force, led by the Brookings Area United Way, brings together community partners dedicated to ensuring that every individual and family in Brookings County has access to essential resources. The task force focuses on increasing coordination, identifying gaps in services, and strengthening support systems related to food, housing, emergency assistance, and other basic necessities. By uniting organizations, sharing information, and aligning efforts, the task force works to improve stability, dignity, and well-being for residents throughout our community.

Additional Resources

  • Brookings School District offers free and reduced-price meals to ensure all students have access to nutritious food. Families can apply anytime online at brookings.k12.sd.us/page/child-nutrition or contact the Child Nutrition Office at 605-696-4713 with any questions.
  • Deubrook BackPack Project - Weekly food bags for students in need of extra dietary support on weekends or outside school hours, distributed in partnership with Deubrook School District. No income or eligibility requirements. Contact school office at 605-626-1101 to sign form and enroll.
  • Elkton Community Cupboard is the City of Elkton's local food pantry that is available the 2nd and 4th Wednesday every month from 4pm - 6pm. Hours may vary due to volunteer staffing and it is encouraged to watch for food pantry updates on the City of Elkton's Facebook page.
  • Brookings Regional Humane Society offers a pet food pantry available for any Brookings County resident who is need of feeding their pet(s). Can be utilized up to 6 times a year. Pet food pantry is open Monday - Friday 12pm - 6pm and Saturdays 11am - 4pm. For any additional questions, call the main office at 605-697-7387.
