Volunteer United provides information and resources to nonprofits, businesses, and volunteers to better serve Brookings County.

Volunteer of the Month Awardees

October 2025: S.T.A.R.S. Volunteers

Special Training and Riding Skills (S.T.A.R.S.) is a Brookings, SD non-profit program offering adaptive horseback riding for people with disabilities, promoting physical and emotional growth through connection with horses. Volunteers make it all possible by helping riders mount, leading horses, and caring for the animals. During the 2025 season, S.T.A.R.S. volunteers logged 650+ hours between June and August, an achievement worth celebrating!

November 2025: Alex Juba

Alex Juba has dedicated his time to supporting Margo’s Place by picking up donations, delivering furniture, and transporting essential items to clients. His efforts ensure survivors receive what they need quickly, providing comfort, dignity, and a renewed sense of normalcy. Alex’s willingness to serve has positively impacted dozens of families and shown how one person can strengthen a community in meaningful, lasting ways!

December 2025: Helen Nielsen

Helen is an irreplaceable asset to Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity! She shows up weekly to keep the office processes organized and program administration supported. From assisting with daily paperwork, to being a positive and personable volunteer, Helen makes a large impact on the organization. Her dedication to this volunteer position is unmatched and her passion for helping others is outstanding. Everyone at Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity is so thankful for Helen!

January 2026: Patti Asmus

Between November and December 2025, Patti donated more than 500 food and personal care items to the BAUW Basic Needs Task Force, making a meaningful impact during a critical time for our community. As a dedicated volunteer, Patti regularly creates meal and hygiene bags with her grandkids and stepped up even further when SNAP benefits were disrupted, ensuring neighbors in need continued to feel supported. By including handwritten recipe cards and words of affirmation, she spreads kindness while modeling the importance of compassion and service for the next generation.

February 2026: Trish Greve

Trish has dedicated more than a decade of service to the Volunteer Service Bank, where she plays an instrumental role in ensuring community members have access to essential medical care. In 2025, Trish completed an incredible 95 drives, helping 95 individuals reach critical healthcare appointments. Many of these appointments may not have been possible without her support!
The strength of the Volunteer Service Bank lies in the dedication of volunteers like Trish, whose compassion and selflessness truly embody the spirit of service.
